Rai Benjamin was no stranger to Olympic heartbreak, falling 0.23 seconds from a gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics despite setting an American record.
Three years later at the 2024 Paris Olympics, he got to enjoy the other end of that emotional spectrum.
The 27-year-old American hurdler won the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles Friday, closing strong to hold off Karsten Warholm of Norway — who beat Benjamin three years earlier in Tokyo — and Alison dos Santos of Brazil to cross the finish line first and bask in the euphoria of his accomplishment.
