Floyd, N.Y. — The driver of a vehicle going the wrong way on a road in Oneida County died in a fiery crash with another vehicle Friday night, deputies said.
An Oneida County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to get the driver out but couldn’t, deputies said in a news release Saturday.
The deputy was driving along Route 49 in the town of Floyd around 10:30 p.m. when he saw a 2022 Ford Explorer traveling west in the eastbound lane, deputies said. The SUV almost hit a vehicle in front of the deputy as well as the deputy’s vehicle, they said.
The deputy put his vehicle’s lights and sirens and tried to stop the SUV but it kept going.
The SUV hit a 2025 Volvo truck and both vehicles caught fire.
The deputy couldn’t get the driver of the SUV out and the driver died at the scene, deputies said. The identity of the driver will be determined by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The driver of the truck, Franklyn Hummel, 64 of West Virginia, escaped his burning vehicle uninjured, deputies said.
Deputies ask anyone who saw a gray 2022 Ford Explorer in the area to call them at (315) 765-2725.
